Metechi garlic produces large, purple striped bulbs that are very firm and round in shape. The blushed colored cloves are large, plump and easy to peel. An excellent storage garlic averaging 6-8 cloves per bulb. Metechi garlic has a fiery taste when eaten raw and mellows nicely when cooked. No home garden should be without this reliable hardneck garlic variety. Grown without pesticides.
HOW TO GROW GARLIC: Plant only the largest individual cloves; eat the smaller ones! Plant the individual cloves into rich, loose soil 6 inches apart in rows 1 foot or more apart . Plant about 2 inches below the soil line, with the plump, rounded side down and pointy end up. A heavy layer of mulch is recommended. When planting in cold areas where the ground freezes, plant 4-6 weeks before the freeze occurs to give the garlic time to establish good root development. In the spring keep your garlic bed well weeded and water as you would for any leafy green vegetable. When the leaves begin to turn brown but there are still 3-4 green leaves left, pull up the bulb and, with the leaves still attached, let it dry in the sun for a few hours. Then spread it out in a dry, well-ventilated place until the leaves are papery, usually 2 or three weeks depending on relative humidity. Cut the leaves off after the curing process and store the bulbs in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location.
